After upgrading the firmware on my Trezor Safe 5, I noticed a significant change to passphrase entry: previously, all entered characters remained visible, but now finalized characters are replaced with asterisks (*).
I use very long and complex passphrases. And to save time, I choose the next character as soon as the previous one has stopped blinking. Because the Safe 5 uses multi-tap character selection, and because the touchscreen is small, it is easy to accidentally select the wrong character. With the old firmware, I could immediately see and correct mistakes. With the new firmware, the character becomes an asterisk as soon as I move on, so an incorrect character can easily go unnoticed.
The display is also too small to show my entire passphrase, so counting the asterisks is not a practical way to verify my progress.
This change has therefore made passphrase entry both significantly slower and more error-prone.
Please consider adding a setting that allows users to choose whether entered passphrase characters remain visible or are hidden with asterisks. This would preserve the new privacy option while allowing users who prefer the previous behavior to continue using it.
