I just realised that every single usb-c cable I have at home just falls out of the Safe 3 port. They don’t stick!
That worries me as I am now dependent on a very specific and rare type of usb-c connector to secure my access to the Safe 3: i.e. the cable that came with it.
It snaps into place with a strong force applied to it (stronger than usual for other things, like a phone).
Every other USB C cable I have will just fall out of the port. I don’t understand how the device can be manufactured this way?
I want to buy 10 backup cables at your shop but that isn’t even available, which makes me think this isn’t an intentional design.
What do I do with this?
(I have tried an s-load of cables, that advice is not useful at this point.)
Trezors require somewhat more force to plug in than usual, to ensure secure fit.
With that in mind, if the cables fall out, that would seem to indicate that they’re not actually fully in.
It is possible that they’d go in if you applied more force. However, given that you tried multiple cables, it may also be the case that your Trezor’s port is defective, which would warrant a replacement.
Just to check: are you perhaps using a bumper case? Which would prevent thicker cables to go fully in, while letting the original cable through?
The other cables I have go all the way in. There can be no more pushing, they are loose and fall out.
I can see that the shape of the indent on the trezor, around the port, matches perfectly with the shape of the plastic on the original cable just above the metal connector.
They are perfectly matched and that gives the loud click when pushing together. And that makes the cable stick firmly.
No other cable I’ve used have that shape or size of the plastic right above the metal connector.
It really does seem to be designed that way. So I’m very confused about it, especially if no one else has experienced this.
I have a bumper case but it’s not close to the port, it doesn’t interfere.
I can confirm that this is not designed this way, not on purpose anyway.
On my testing Trezors, there is a click but it’s not “loud”. Plus, what makes the cable stick is the metal part deep inside Trezor body, not the plastic.
Your description makes me think that perhaps on your unit, it is indeed the plastic that holds it together.
Which … would indicate that your Trezor’s port really is faulty, but not in the way I thought. New guess: it’s probably recessed too deep into the plastic enclosure. Your other cables can’t reach, and the factory cable, through pure chance, happens to fit into the opening and reach the grabby part.
I have actually seen improperly seated Trezor boards where the port could not be reached from the outside well enough to connect. Does your Trezor rattle when you shake it? Do the buttons look like they don’t sit well?
…in any case, there is no design to any of this, you unfortunately received a faulty unit. If you contact support, as @forgi had suggested, you’ll likely be able to ask for a replacement.
