Question about updating the Model T firmware

Greetings

I have been using my Trezor Model T as a safe for my coins in HODL for a while now and have firmware 2.6.0 on it

Missed a lot of firmware essentially because the wallet is just lying around and I haven’t used it.

Now I’ve seen a lot of new firmware for my device, read the list of changes and didn’t notice any critical ones in terms of security.

Anticipating the question, “Why don’t you just update?”
Having read a bunch of different posts on the forum that after some firmware updates Trezor Suite stops displaying the correct address when using passphrase and I would not like to face this honestly.

I would like to ask if perhaps I am mistaken and missed some critical firmware update, whether in my case, using my device in the future will not be at risk with this version of firmware 2.6.0.

Coins I hold BTC, ETH, Cardano

I will be very grateful for a detailed answer <3 @matejcik

If there is no vulnerability such as the firmware before 1.6 of the one model, which leads to a forced upgrade, you can continue to use this firmware.

Zero of those people used the Trezor recently, and none of them checked immediately before the upgrade that (a) their seed backup works and (b) that their passphrase works, and (c) that their funds are visible.

I mean. I don’t want to call it “user error” but also it’s not like there is a bug in the software or firmware causing it. If there were, we’d see hundreds of complaints after the same bad upgrade, not random isolated ones throughout the year. Thousands of people never run into any problems, but you don’t see those on the forum.

Upgrading the firmware is almost certainly not the cause here anyway.

That is to say, you will be fine upgrading.

If you want to be very sure, follow these steps:

  1. first, run the Check backup function. Dry-run recover your seed to see that it matches your Trezor
  2. save all xpubs of your Bitcoin accounts, and receive addresses of other kinds of coins. You can put them in a text file on your PC, these are not secret.
  3. uninstall and reinstall Trezor Suite, open your accounts and see that they are fine.

then you can be assured that your setup is fine, and upgrading will also be fine.

Think of it this way: do you want to upgrade now, try it out while you’re calm and have the time to dot your Ts and cross your Is, test the whole process?

Or do you want to do it in a year when a critical update does arrive, in a panic and worried that something may fail?

The last thing I read was from this topic (I can’t provide links to them unfortunately) and also saw a discussion that lasted from 2021 and there still appear people who after the update could not enter the wallet with the passphrase.

There is also the possibility of seeing a red screen when updating

I always used and use the web version of Trezor Suite

I’d honestly prefer not to touch it as long as everything works
Don’t get me wrong, I’m worried about whether I missed a “critical” update that could put my coins at risk.
I couldn’t find anything like that in changelog myself, so I thought I’d check here.
P.S. I have less doubts about the update, but still the number of posts on the forum strongly discourages me from doing it.

This can happen, but it is nothing to worry about if your backup is good.

Listen, let me put this in a completely different way.

Right now, you’re worried about upgrading, but let me ask you: what if your house burns down tomorrow and the Trezor is destroyed? What will you do then? You’ll need to get a new one, and presumably install the latest firmware.

If your backup is good, nothing can happen to your coins. Nothing a Trezor firmware upgrade could do would endanger the coins – the wallet can’t be “erased” or anything like that.

The fact that you worry about upgrading tells me that you are not 100% sure about your backup.

This is not a great place to be. Please take some steps to make sure that your backup is good.

First, go run Check backup as soon as you have a bit of time to do it.

Then get yourself another hardware wallet – a Trezor One, or one of the competitors, whatever, doesn’t matter. Restore your backup + passphrase into that other wallet. Check that your funds are there.

This will give you peace of mind, assuring you that your backup is good and that whatever happens to the Trezor, your coins are safe. You could find them once, you’ll be able to find them again.

As a side-effect, when you have that, you won’t worry about upgrading anymore  Then you can still choose not to upgrade – it is as you say, there is probably no critical problem that you’d need to fix right away. But you also can stop worrying and just upgrade. And you’ll be fine.

I’m 100% confident in my backup, and I’ve already verified its correctness several times.
It’s just a choice to upgrade or not, and I can see the chances of getting myself in trouble in a situation where the upgrade will cause problems later on
I do not find the sense to update it and get a chance to gain any nerves with the sorting out of problems.

Buying a second device would solve these possible problems, but alas now there is no possibility to order to my country.

To be honest, I just wanted to hear something like “Your coins are safe on your firmware version”
