Help Needed: Multi-Share 3/5 Backup, Invalid Multi-Share Seed Generation

Hi everyone,

I’ve been using various hardware and software wallets over the years and recently got my first Trezor. However, I’m running into issues with the multi-share 3/5 backup process and could really use some guidance.

Here’s what happened:

  1. I followed the start procedure with the Trezor Suite and created a multi-share 3/5 backup.
  2. To ensure everything was set up correctly, I attempted a simulated backup recovery. Unfortunately, it failed, stating the backup was invalid.
  3. I tried entering the seed into my Keystone wallet, but it also reported the seed as invalid.

To troubleshoot:

  1. I reset the Trezor and repeated the process. This time, I took photos of the keys to double-check my entries.
  2. Once again, the simulated recovery failed with an “invalid key” message, and the Keystone gave the same result.
  3. I reset the Trezor again and attempted to restore using the photographed keys from my second attempt. Same invalid result.

For comparison:

  • I generated a new multi-share 3/5 seed on the Keystone and restored it successfully to the Trezor.
  • I also tried generating 12-word and 24-word backups on the Trezor, and those worked perfectly on both the Keystone and Ledger.

It seems the issue is specific to generating a valid multi-share 3/5 seed on the Trezor itself.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem or have insights into what might be causing this? I’d appreciate any advice or suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, at this moment Keystone wallet is incompatible with Trezor-generated seeds, until the following PR is merged: Implement slip39 extendable backups by onvej-sl · Pull Request #1102 · KeystoneHQ/keystone3-firmware · GitHub

So Keystone giving you “invalid seed” would be an expected result.

It’s surprising that Trezor itself would reject the seed though.

Could you post the seed here? I assume you are not using it  (that would be a spectacularly bad idea)

Strange. I use multi share shamir backup for Trezor and it works fine.

Thanks for the reply, No I am not using it. this 1 of the 5.

I have pasted the above seed into an analyzer and it decodes fine. I also can recover it on my Trezor and it says “1 of 3 shares entered, 2 more shares needed”.

So as far as I can test, the seed is fine.

Please try recovering it again carefully. If you still fail, could you post a video?
