Access old Trezor Model One without firmware update

Hello!

I am trying to access an old Trezor Model One with firmware from 2017 (It’s a 1.6.x firmware version).

The problem is that the recovery phrase was lost and I don’t want to risk updating the firmware (in case something goes wrong).

Is there any way to access it? e.g. using some older version of the Suite App

Thank you!

You can try to connect your Trezor with Electrum wallet for Bitcoin.

Thanks will get to try it on Monday and report back if it worked!

The problem may be that some blockchains may refuse to work on old firmware because it has not been updated to maintain current functionality.

Hi @bitbuy,

First, I would like to mention that this is the reason why wallet backup (recovery seed) is so important. If you had it, gaining access to your funds is very easy.

You can also try to connect to the oldest version of Trezor Suite (v20.10.1) which can be downloaded at Release v20.10.1 · trezor/trezor-suite · GitHub

Hopefully, your wallet will be accessible in this oldest version of Trezor Suite.

Hi,

thanks Radek, using v20.10.1 worked perfectly.

Regarding Electrum, it didn’t work with the version I had already installed on my machine, but I guess it would have worked with an older version.

Great to read you are able to access your wallet in the oldest version of Trezor Suite! Now you need to move all funds from this wallet (without wallet backup) to a new wallet (backed up by a new wallet backup). Please, make sure you have the new wallet backup verified before you move your funds there.

There are two possibilities:

  1. If you have another Trezor device, you can follow the steps in this guide: Recovery seed phrase has been compromised: moving funds to a new wallet.
Please proceed with the steps described in the “You have multiple Trezor devices available”

  2. If you have only one Trezor, you will have to use a temporary SW wallet that supports coins you need to move.

Send your coins to another SW wallet of your choice.

Then, after you wipe your Trezor and create a new Trezor wallet with a new wallet backup, you can move the funds from the temporary SW wallet back to the newly created Trezor wallet.

It is really important to keep your wallet backup words safe since only the wallet backup can be used to recover your wallet if your device gets destroyed or misplaced.
